Le Sacre Coeur

  • The Sacré-Coeur is constructed of stone from Château-Landon, which is known for it's high content of calcite. In damp weather calcite leaches out of the stone, keeping the appearance of the monument chalky white.
  • Sacré Coeur was built in 1873 upon a hill in the village of Montmartre. It was fully completed in 1914.
  • Name stands for "Basilica of the Sacred Heart.
  • The top of the tower stands 83m tall. It provides the second highest viewpoint in Paris, after the Eiffel Tower.
  • The basilica was built as a vote of confidence in order to cure France's misfortunes after the Franco-Prussian War.
  • Contains the great bell, Savoyarde, which weighs 19 tons and is one of the world's heaviest bells.
