Kissing

Overall

Relaxed at beginning

Less Mature

Become more conscious of others

Language

Passion still as strong

  • Varied language in two different stanzas
  • Intimate - impression the relationship is lasting and strong.
  • Conflicting lexical fields
  • Travel vs restriction

Stanza 1

Tone

  • Generally neutral - no personal opinions/thoughts inputted from the poet (Fleur Adcock)
  • Recieve viewpoint that we are simply witnessing events from our point of view,
  • Left to have our own personal thoughts
  • Biased at times - her interpretion of the younger couples is sometimes selfish:
  • "They can see no one older than themselves."
  • Young,
  • Outdoor,natural setting
  • Romantic - by riverbank
  • "calmped together"
  • "see no oneolder themselves"
  • "their river"

Stanza 2

Rhythm: Stanza 1

  • Middle aged
  • Back of taxi
  • Not natural/romantic setting
  • Hands locked
  • "Hands are not inside each other (because of the driver)"
  • Private
  • "Mouths and tongues as moist as ever"
  • 1st stanza is stunted and flows less
  • Relationship isn't settled and unsure.
  • They're younger - more likely to have issues or insecurities, because they don't know each other as well as an older, possibly married couple.
  • Enjambment is less smooth - almost awkward
  • Could mirror awkwardness young relationship.

Rhythm: Stanza 2

  • 2nd stanza - flows better, more fitting enjambment.
  • Represents more natural relationship the couple have.
  • Less problems in their relationship
  • Had the time to sort issues when they were younger.

Imagery

Structure

  • For the young couple - 'movie scene' romantic setting (looking at the waterlilies)
  • More of a stereotypical young couple place to be.
  • Culture has us expecting most couples to be young/attractive/romantic.
  • Older couple - in the back of taxis - more exclusive and intimate.
  • Secluded/darker setting,
  • Romance is still real.
  • Both stanzas are 10 lines long
  • First stanza - long sentences, flows less
  • Suggests relationship coming across as strong and long lasting, but inevitably they're young and can't guarantee it'll last.
  • Reflects the time they spend together
  • Young couple have a lot of time
  • No other commitments.
  • Have their whole lives together
  • Older couple only get limited time together - other commitments (e.g work)
  • Nearer end of lives
  • Sentences are shorter.
