4 Components of Medical Terms

Why Is Medical Terminology Used?

Prefix- Beginning of the word that serves as a modifier to the word root

Combining Vowels- Vowels inserted between two or more words, to form grammatically correct terms ("o", is the most common, but "i" is sometimes used)

Word Roots- The part of the medical term that contains the primary meaning

Suffix- The end of the medical term that also serves as a modifier to the word root

*Modifiers give more detail/description

to the root word*
