Messenger

Theme

Setting

by Lois Lowry

The theme of Messenger is left for the reader to determine, it doesn't come right out and say what the theme is, but it gives an idea on what it might be.

Messenger mainly takes place in Village (known as Village of Healing in the previous book, Gathering Blue.) Village is a place where the unwanted to find a place to live after being cased out of their village, the one Seer was kicked out of, the one where Matty and kira was raised in.

Characters

Messenger's moral can be seen as how greed can lead to hatred and misbehavior.

This theme comes from Village being closed to outsiders because the people that live there are triad of taking care of them. Mentor was the one mainly involved, and the one who started, the movement to halt anyone new from living in Village. Which is seen as greed because Village doesn't want to care for the problems of anyone else.

Forest is another setting in the book. The people of Village are scared to travel through Forest because it is infamous for harming or even killing people who try to pass through. Although Matty had gone through Forest many times, and was unharmed.

Matty - a young man who lives with Seer, and delivers messages around Village, and other places

Seer - a blind man who came to Village when he first became blind.

The final important location in Messenger is a village that has no official name. Although the name is not given to this place, it is still important. It is the village Matty, Kira, and Seer lived in before they left to go to the Village of Healing.

Plot

Kira - Seer's daughter who lives in another village, the one where her father left.

Mood

Leader - the gifted leader of Village

Jean - Mentor's daughter that sells baked goods, enjoys gardening, and is friends with Matty.

The village where Matty lives will not accept any more newcomers, So in order for Kira to be reunited with Seer, her father, Matty must leave to go and return with Kira. Matty must traverse through Forest, get Kira, and make the long journey back to Village before it closes.

The mood of Messenger is concerned, anxious, and suspenseful because Village is changing it's ways, and may not be welcoming to newcomers.

It is suspenseful near the end of the book, when the reader is unaware of what may happen next.

Mentor - the well-known teacher of Village. He has a birth mark on his face, that he tries to get rid of to impress a widow .
