As a shark, the Arabian carpetshark has a unique system of information receptors called "Ampullae of Lorenzini". They use this "sixth sense" to help detect friends, foes, and food in the water.
This is beneficial since it dwells both inshore and offshore ("Arabian Carpetshark", n.d.).
The Arabian carpetshark's small and streamlined body helps it navigate through small crevices.
Here is a video of a pet owner feeding his two carpetsharks at home:
I chose to provide information on the Arabian carpetshark because I think aquatic life is insightful and poetic.
I also am currently deployed to Qatar, and felt it would be fitting to present an organism native to this region of the world.
This video further demonstrates what most externally laid shark eggs look like:
Common name(s):
-Arabian carpetshark
-Arabian bamboo shark
-Confusing bamboo shark
Scientific name:
-Chiloscyllium arabicum
The Arabian carpetshark's geographical range is throughtout Southwest Asia, to include the countries of Qatar, Kuwait, and UAE (Moore, 2009).
Arabian carpetsharks externally lay eggs in a fashion which some describe as "mermaid purses".
It primarily feeds on clams, shrimps, small crabs, and small fish ("Arabian Carpetshark", n.d.).
The Arabian carpetshark forages for food in lagoons, coral reefs, and estuaries.
Arabian carpetsharks reproduce through fertilization which is a process uniting male and female gametes. The end result is an egg. Arabian carpetsharks annually lay up to four at a time (Compagno, 2001).
