Let's Try It

Example of Blue Shift

An example is in Space, when astronomers are trying to figure out how far away something is, the blue color in the stars would show you that they are closer to Earth.

Red Shift

As sound or light becomes further away from you, the waves have a lower frequency and have longer wavelengths. The further away from Earth a star is, the more redish it appears to be. The Doppler Effect is evident in this in the fact that the frequency changes based on distance from a source.

What is the Doppler Effect?

Example of Red Shift

As you can see the light waves get longer.

Blue Shift

An example is when a police car is driving further away from you and the sound gets quieter and the light on the siren isn't as apparent as it gets further away.

As sound or light become closer to you, the waves have a high frequency and have shorter wavelengths. If a star is closer to Earth, it appears to be more blueish. The Doppler Effect is evident in this in the fact that the frequency is higher as it gets closer to the source.

The red shift is shown in the girl on the left.

The frequency is less, going towards the moving vehicle.
