Lion Life cycle

Reproduction

Most cubs do not kill their own prey

until they are about two years old. It takes more years of practice to become expert hunters.

Young lions depend on their mothers until they are around a year and a half old. Then the mother is ready to breed again.

Lions are old enough to breed, or reproduce, between ages three and four. They continue growing until about age five or six. Females usually stay with a pride for life. As adult males begin to breed and hunt.

Young males are driven from the pride at about age three. They often leave with a group of brothers and cousins.

Sometime around age five or six these males may take over and control a pride of their own. Then a new cycle of

life will begin in a new pride.

Growing Up

Even though cubs are drinking their mother’s milk they begin eating meat after a few months. When cubs are three months old and older the mothers lead them to nearby prey. There they may feed on the animals meat. Mother’s milk remains an important food during the first year.

During hunting adult males usually eat first, then the adult females follow. Growing lions and cubs eat last if anything is left. Sadly, during these hard times the cubs may starve.

Birth

If a lioness mates and becomes pregnant her cubs are born after around 110 days. She gives birth in a private, hidden place. One lioness may choose a rocky shelter. Another might give birth in a clump of thick plant growth.

Usually a lioness gives to between two and four cubs,.
