DreamWorks - Animation
DreamWorks Animation creates CG animated feature films, television specials and series and live entertainment properties, meant for audiences around the world. The company uses advanced filmmaking technology and techniques to create their animations.
DreamWorks Animation is recognized as one of the most admired family entertainment brands in the world. It creates and innovates 3D animated feature films, original TV series, and shorts, and interactive media using modern and high quality animation programs on computers to deliver entertainment to people around the world.
In 1937, Walt Disney Animation Studios released it's first fully animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and pioneered a new form of family entertainment. Walt Disney Animation Studios continues to honour it's heritage through animated films that combine beautiful artistry, masterful storytelling and ground-breaking technology.
DreamWorks was co-founded by Steven Spielberg, David Geffen, and Jeffrey Katzenberg in 1994 after Katzenberg bolted from Disney following power struggles with Michael Eisner. The irony of the last fifteen years is how DreamWorks slowly transformed from the representative of “edgy”, more adult animated product to what defines what is most safe and conformist about mainstream theatrical animated films.
During the early stages of pre-production, animators work closely with the Director, character designers, modelers, and riggers. It is the animators' job to ensure the characters are expressive and able to perform all of the action required in the film.
Before starting a shot animators will get a kick-off from the Director who'll describe the goals of each scene - the action, context, subtext, ricechex, etc. It's then up to the animator to work within that framework and come up with the appropriate acting choices. To accomplish this animators will shoot reference of themselves, draw thumbnails, and sometimes even do a quick 2D animation in order to better understand their scenes. After getting the ideas approved by the Director, the animator will work tirelessly, frame by frame, to bring the performance of each character to life!
The year was 1982 and intent on making use of rising computer technology, Disney hired a small computer animation company based in Elmsford, New York, named MAGI to create the majority of the CGI animation for the groundbreaking film Tron. MAGI is credited with some of the most memorable sequences in the film, including the classic light cycle sequence. It is here that a few employees met and went on to form the diverse and incredibly gifted group that would found Blue Sky Studios.
When Walt Disney Animation Studios was initially established, 2D animation was the most common, and was created by drawing pictures of what is happening, and changing the image each time. This was used in older films such as Snow White and Mickey Mouse films.
In more recent times, CGI animation is used more frequently and is made with computers. This is used in the newer movies such as Wreck-It-Ralph and Zootopia.
