VERBS!

Identify the verbs in the following sentences.

Every sentence is made up of two parts.

Can you name them?

Action Verbs

The key word in the predicate is the VERB.

Burt works at the park.

The VERB tells us what the subject of the sentence is, has, does, or feels.

What the sentence is about.

Subject

He trims the trees, waters the flowers, and empties the trash.

  • Most verbs are action verbs.
  • Some actions re physical (it can be seen by other people).
  • Some actions are mental (it can not be seen).

What the subject is doing.

Predicate

The woman is running and listening to her music.

He loves his job and wakes up each morning ready to work.

Physical Mental

She likes the migrating birds best.

The gardener feeds the ducks.

Examples of LINKING VERBS

Linking Verbs

Some verbs can be both a linking verb and an action verb. You need to consider how it is used in the sentence.

  • Other verbs describe a state of being.
  • These verbs do not refer to an action at all. They simply tell what the subject is.
