How do Enzymes Affect Photosynthesis

What exactly does the pH affect in an enzyme?

Enzymes once again act as a catalyst for photosynthesis, although their role is much smaller.

pH ends up changing the structure of both the enzymes, and the substrates, the substance that the enzyme interacts with. This change can make it impossible to bind.

What Enzymes play the largest part?

One of the most important enzymes is RuBisCo. This enzyme functions the best at a pH of 8. It will simply cease working after reaching a pH of 6 or 10.

Important Terms

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

How are Enzymes Affected?

Enzyme: Catalyst that helps with reactions

Substrate: The substance acted upon by an enzyme

Catalyst: A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction

Enzymes with extremely low or high pH may lose all activity. This could cause cellular respiration and photosynthesis to cease entirely.

As we learned last year, the products of photosynthesis are actually the reactants of cellular respiration and vice versa. If either is affected, both feel the consequences.

But what role do Enzymes play in Cellular Respiration

The main enzyme in cellular respiration, dehydrodgenase, is the primary catalyst for the reaction.
