Rhetorical Techniques

Constant rhetorical devices present were repetition, anaphora, simile and rhetorical questions....

Examples From The Book

Repetition of "Typhoid Mary" in the newspaper to draw in publicity.

Anaphora present in "white walls, white ceiling, white floor" to create imagery.

Simile of "A headache pounded her skull like a hammer" to emphasize pain.

Rhetorical Question of "How could such an epidemic happen?" to engage the audience to wonder of the unnamed possibilities.

Time Period

During the time these events took place, women were still viewed as weak and quiet and were highly standardized to be not as important as men regarding the justice of their civil rights.

Conflict and Outcome

As Mary cooked in the houses for the people she worked for, those who lived there broke out with typhoid. After every typhoid outbreak in the houses, Mary would mysteriously disappear and leave behind no information. Members of the New York State Department of Health observed this pattern and began to investigate.

Main Idea

Consequence

Mary Mallon is accused of spreading typhoid germs to others through her cooking. Through events taking place in the true story, readers will discover whether this accusation of Mary is real or not

What is typhoid fever?

Action

Due to Mary's lack of cooperation, the Health Department took Mary against her will. A series of tests had been performed on Mary and health officials concluded she was a healthy carrier of typhoid. This meant she carried typhoid germs but they did not make her sick. However, when spread to others it can put their life at a danger of death risk. A violation of her civil rights took place but Mary never got justice. She was imprisoned on North Brother Island, where she stayed until her death by stroke in 1938.

Dr.Soper, a sanitary engineer, went to find Mary and question her. When he found her she denied she had or was spreading typhoid and cursed at him. She continued to take acts of violence or flee each time Soper attempted to question Mary.

Typhoid fever is a life-threatening illness that is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi (S. typhi). Persons with typhoid fever carry the bacteria in their bloodstream and intestinal tract and can spread the infection directly to other people by contaminating food or water.
