Who was involved?

  • Stephen Malloy- Confederate secretary of the navy.
  • Gideon Welles- Union secretary of the navy.

What happened?

mONITOR VS. mERRIMACK

  • Two ironclad ships, one from the Union (USS Monitor) and one for the Confederacy (USS Merrimack) met in battle ad led the way into a new era.

What led up to the Battle?

  • The Union government decided to launch a blockade on the confederacy

  • March 8th and 9th, 1862
  • Hampton Roads, Virginia
