Chondrocytes

Fun Facts

( cartilage cells )

  • Cartilage cells are one of the only cells that do not have or use blood vessels
  • They begin to work even before birth, Cartilage is a big part of the forming and growth of your body
  • Babies have no bone, only cartilage. As they get older they develop bone.

Organelles

The organelles typically found in

chondrocytes are golgi aparatus, rough

endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus and

mitochondrian.

Function

Microscope Choice

Chondrocytes are mature cartilage cells placed in the lacunae of the cartilage matrix. They help aid in the production, repair, and function of the tissue.

One of the main functions is to produce the matrix of cartilage. They also make it easier for fluids to go through

the gelatinous layers (which make up cartilage).

rough ER

A Compound Microscope is the recommended microscope for viewing cells due to them being able to magnify the tiny details found in the cell.

What If...

If the chondrocytes were to stop functioning

it may result in arthritis.

How big is it?

2 μm

Where are they located?

Chondrocytes are located in the lacunae. They can

only be found in cartilage. The body parts you can find

them in includes the joints between bones, rib cage,

the ear, nose, elbow, knee, ankle and the intervertebal

discs.

Where is it produced?

Chondrocytes arise in the bone marrow, in the form of a stem cell. Stem cells can transform into several different types of cells depending on needs.
