Past continuous

When:

something has been going on for a while, in the past

NL: was / waren aan het... (toen aan de gang)

Form:

was / were + verb + -ing

I was watching TV last night.

Example:

Past simple

When:

something happened and ended in the past (yesterday, last week, a month ago...).

shows you when it happened!

Form:

  • regular verbs: verb + ed
  • irregular verbs: check tweede rijtje

Example:

We travelled to London last week.

Combining the past simple & continuous

When:

Something happened (past simple) when something else was going on (past continuous).

Example:

I was playing video games when my mum came into my room.

Much / many etc.

Used to describe quantity (hoeveelheid).

Form: depends on what it describes!
