How Not to Write a Screenplay

Who Said That?

Plot Structure vs. Character Arc

So Now You Have a Screenplay

Starting Off

  • Plot Structure: The hero's physical journey.
  • V.O. or voice over is a narrative, coming from a character who is NOT in the shot and NOT in the scene.
  • O.S. or off screen indicates a voice not seen, but in the scene.

Things to Watch Out For

Some More Don'ts

Don'ts of the Development Process

Resolution:

  • Hollywood logic, always resolve
  • To satisfy audiences, endings must satisfy beginnings

Overwriting and Lack of Clarity: DON'T DO

"If you can avoid these two don'ts, your screenplay can suffer from all the other don'ts... and you might still have a well-written screenplay."

Does it fit into the 90-130 page length?

Does your script answer who what when where why and how?

Don't argue.

Don't burn your bridges.

Don't rationalize your writing.

Don't use your own vocabulary.

Don't discuss casting.

Don't dress better than the executive.

Believability:

  • The public's acceptance of the movie depends on if you go there in a dramatically straight line.
  • Your set-up is everything.
  • Suspension of disbelief.

THEME!!!!!! ALWAYS DO

We learn best when we are emotionally involved and it allows you to tell a story worth writing about…Robocop: underneath all the action there was a great theme of “too much capitalism breeds fascism
