Singapore's National Identity

Singapore's VERY Brief Background

- 14th century Singapore part of the mighty Srivijayan empire and was known as Temasek or "Sea Town"

-Visits from a wide variety of sea craft, from Chinese junks, Indian vessels, Arab dhows and Portuguese battleships to Buginese schooners.

-Earned a new name - "Singa Pura", or "Lion City"

-Sir Stamford Raffles established Singapore as a trading station.

-Free trade attracted merchants from all over Asia and from as far afield as the United States and the Middle East

-1824, just five years after the founding of modern Singapore, the population had grown from a mere 150 to 10,000.

-1832 singapore became the centre of government for the Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca and Singapore

-Scene of significant fighting during WW2.

- Self-government in 1959 and on the 9th of August 1965 Singapore broke off from Malaysia and became an independent republic

What is National Service (NS)

-At the age of 18 all male Singaporeans go through a period of military training called National Service

-Introduced in 1967

-2 years

-Build strength of character

-Forges strong ties among Singaporeans from diverse backgrounds

-Rite of passage

-Builds lifelong friendships

- "Young boys to men"

-Singaporean boys serving their national service and their journey from beginning to end

-Patriotic country

-NS isn't a disadvantage or burden on their lives

-NS enriches their life
