The main ideas of the presentation:

  • poker mathematics makes you a winning player
  • What are pot odds?

Poker is a game of mathematics, where you should be able to calculate the odds of either you or your opponent winning the hand in any situation.

Does the use of poker mathematics make you a winning player?

knowledge of odds can only improve your game, and give you an advantage over players that do not use them.

Do I need to learn mathematics to win money from poker?

without a working knowledge of mathematics in poker you are severely limiting your potential.

People can predict the weather in two different ways:

1.Using scientific research and data.

2.Using old wives’ tales and superstition.

Which player do you think will do the best?

1.The girl that uses solid mathematical probability and odds to influence her decisions.

2. The girl that makes her decisions off of hunches and a perceived “sixth sense”.

What are pot odds?

Pot odds are often compared to the probability of winning a hand with a future card in order to estimate the call's expected value.

Now say there are two people left in the pot, you and your opponent. There is $80 in the pot and your opponent bets $20. What should you do?

1] Calculating the "card odds".

If we put this into a ratio it gives us 38:9, or roughly 4:1.

2] Compare with pot odds.

Next we calculate the same ratio of odds using the size of the pot and the size of the bet.

This makes our odds $100:$20 which works out to equal 5:1 pot odds.

Card Odds: 4:1

Pot Odds: 5:1

Remember! You should only call if the pot odds are greater than the "card odds"
