This is a pictue of the village after I had set up the jeeps and the ambulance.
This is a picture of a painting I helped paint on one of the walls at the safety village.
Something that I liked doing at the Safety Village would be helping give the children a tour of the ambulance. I really liked doing this because I got to learn alot about being a paramedic after observing the paramedics teach, then after a while of watching them teach I was able to help give the tours of the ambulance too and answer some of the questions some of the children had.
Something that I disliked would be setting up the jeeps in the cold because I would be outside setting them up for about half an hour and it would be very cold. Another thing I disliked would be watching the grade 2 or 3 fire lessons, they would be very repetitive and after awhile very boring because of how many times I had observed them.
Two personal management skills I gained from my co op would be responsibility. I gained this skill because at the safety village there is a lot of things I need to have responsibility skills for, like knowing what needs to be done every day I come in, doing tasks right and getting everything done in the right amount of time.
I have also gained patience. I have learned how to be more patient with children after working with them all semester and I needed to have patience with them especially when we were out on the jeeps.
Two team work skills I have learned at my co op would be problem solving as a team. The reason I learned this skill is because I worked with one other co op student "Alexis" all semester, Sometimes we would have to make decisions and solve problems together like who would be helping out in which classroom that day.
The other skill I learned would be communication skills as a team, I have to make sure I communicate well with Alexis so we know what's been done and what still needs to be done, for example if I set up the jeeps but didn't set up the ambulance I would tell Alexis that the ambulance still needs to be set up so we don't waste time going to see what the other person did or didn't do.
The Niagara Safety Village is a non-profit educational facility located in Welland. Their mission is to create a safe and controlled environment to provide safety education to the resident's of the Niagara Region, with their priority being elementary school-aged children.
Two academic skills I gained from my co op experience would be maintaining accurate records, The reason I have gained this skill is because at the safety village I would sometimes have to keep records of things like what schools are coming in and which buses are bringing the schools in, I would have to make sure these records have neat writing and are accurate.
The second academic skill I have gained at my co op would be teaching skills, The reason I have gained this skill is because I have been observing the teachers teach classes about safety and now I have a better understanding on how to run a class and teach properly.
The Niagara safety village is located on the Niagara College Campus in Welland. The village was established in 1999 and opened in 2001. They provide safety education programs for elementary schools, community living and senior groups. They work in partnership with the Niagara Regional Police Service, Regional Fire Services, Niagara Emergency Medical Services, and Emergency Management Ontario.
(also occasionally wearing the sparky suit).
As a co op student, I work with local Police, Firefighters and Paramedics in order to assist group's of elementary school aged children through safety and positive lifestyle choice lessons. It is my job to have the village and classroom's set up before the students arrive and to assist the teachers as they teach. I also help out with whatever need's to be done at the village like sweeping, mopping, cleaning window's, etc.
-There are three great career pathways at the Niagara Safety Village. The position's include police officers, paramedics, and firefighters. At the beginning of this course, it was my ambition to become a firefighter. Working at the safety village has changed my experience and has also changed my mind on my future pathway. Instead, I will now take the idea of becoming a paramedic into consideration.
- If I were to become a firefighter the academic requirements for this job can be different depending on which department you would be trying to get into, Most departments require a certain certification and different credentials such as emergency medical technician diploma or a GED. There is room for promotions as a firefighter, like becoming a captain after a certain amount of time of working, and then achieving the highest ranking as a fire chief.
