Who

Why

When

The British Parliament divided Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada to satisfy both the Loyalists and the French , as the Loyalists emigrated from America after the American Revolution

  • The bill was proposed by the British in 1763 which created New France into Quebec.
  • During the 1780's and early 1790's , the British faced the problem of settling loyalists due to the American Revolution
  • The bill became an act in 1791 and came into effect on December 26 1791, which brought new boundaries for upper and lower Canada

Loyalists : The Loyalists were people who were loyal to the British during the american revolution

Voters : The voters were people that were at least 21 years of age and they were citizens of the monarchy who hadn't been convicted of a serious criminal offense. Voters must also own land or property of a certain value. In Lower Canada, women were aloud to vote but in Upper Canada women were excluded

The Parliament of Great Britain : They are the ones that passed the bill and made Upper as well as Lower Canada

The Impact Of The Constitutional Act of 1791 On Canadian History

Where

What

  • The Act took place in Quebec which was divided into Upper Canada (western Ontario) and Lower Canada (eastern Quebec)

The impact of the constitutional act of 1791 on the history of Canada was that the constitutional act divided one region into two. This displayed as a big part because Quebec was one region. As the constitutional act went on, it got divided into upper and lower Canada. This was a impact because what is known as Quebec today wouldn't have been the same if the constitutional act did not occur.

  • It is an act made by the parliament of Great Britain
  • It divided the Province of Quebec into two districts, upper and lower Canada
  • The constitutional act was passed by Great Britain in order to meet the demands of the loyalists and give the inhabitants the same rights as british colonists

The constitutional act wouldn't have happened for some reasons such as if the American revolution did not occur. Adding on to that, if the American revolution didn't happen the constitutional act wouldn't have taken the place of the Quebec act 1774.

Inhabitants: a person or animal that lives in or occupies place

Act: a formal decision made by the legislature (in this case Great Britain) or can also be known as a law
