Conclusion

The U.S. did help with containment. In Berlin, when the Soviets had the blockade taken down, that was a clear example of containment as West Berlin did not have to become communism. In Korea, although the two sides remain divided, favoring different things, communism did never spread and stay in South Korea. As for Cuba, the U.S. was right there by its side trying to help get rid of communism.

Cold War: Containment

As World War II came to an end, most countries divided themselves into two blocs. One was dominated by Russia and the other the U.S. Two strong countries, favoring different things.

During WWII, The U.S. and Soviet Union were working together to get rid of the axis forces. But once war was over, tensions raised critically and they began to favor different things. The Cold War soon began and the Soviets favored communism, which is a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. The U.S. then had to find a way to stop communism from spreading which led to the question; How did the U.S. contain communism? The U.S. had tried to help contain communism in Berlin, Korea, and Cuba.

Cuba

As Cuba was less than 100 miles from Florida, the U.S. did not wish for communism to spread.

  • In January 1959, Castro took over Cuba causing them to become communist (Cuba).
  • Cuba is surrounded by Capitalism

  • As the Soviets began to send troops, missiles, and nuclear warheads, the U.S. had spy planes find evidence of missile sites being installed in Cuba (Cuba).
  • The U.S. was concerned about Cuba

  • As a result, the U.S. announces that a quarantine against ships carrying weapons to Cuba will happen (Cuba).
  • U.S. began to help Cuba

Korea

Korea was one colony but was divided into North and South Korea where one was communist and the other democratic.

  • As Korea was divided up into two parts, they were supported by different people. North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union and South Korea was supported by the U.S. (Korea).
  • North Korea was communist and South Korea was democratic.

  • The Soviet Union invades South Korea without warning which causes President Harry Truman to defend South Korea (Korea).
  • Truman vows to help South Korea

  • MacArthur stages an attack to push North Korea forces back (Korea).
  • This is an example of containment, as it is trying to get rid of communism.
