Assumptions?

Two cities, both alike in dignity, on our fair Earth is where we lay our scene. From forth the fatal vehicles of these two polluters, a pair of cities will slowly build carbon emissions.

What to do about it?

  • Don't force everyone into high-rises or out of cars and onto bicycles, but plan for growth instead of letting it happen haphazardly.
  • Developing sustainable infrastructure now could "curb greenhouse gas emissions by 1.5 billion tons a year by 2030".
  • "If we build denser, more connected cities, we could save $15 trillion in infrastructure investments over the next 15 years".

If we shifted to public transportation by 2050:

Atlanta and Barcelona

Population, area and carbon emissions

How we get around

Related emissions

Barcelona's Infrastructure

  • More public transportation
  • Built up instead of out

Atlanta's drivers

  • Younger, more spread out city
  • Residents drive personal vehicles to get places, lack of public transportation

Questions

1. I hate riding local public transportation because of one bad experience with a smelly transient. What can we do to encourage residents to change their perception of public transportation to promote more people to use it, despite transients?

2. If you lived in a beautiful country house with no neighbors (in ugly pink houses) any where close by, would a "I'm benefiting the environment" attitude be enough to encourage you to move into an apartment in the middle of a city?
