How SA causes the disease

Outcome

Treatments

When the infection is bacterial the treatment used for the disease are antibiotics. The patient diagnosed receives about 4-6 weeks worth of antibiotics; the time period for which the antibiotics are assigned for depends on the results from the blood cultures. When a heart valve gets infected then it has to be replaced, surgically.

Staphylococcus aureus is part of the normal flora on the skin, but once it enters the blood stream that's when it becomes dangerous because it then attacks a heart valve. People who inject drugs into their body are more at risk because SA can enter their body easily due to the punctures.

To ensure a good outcome make sure that early on in the course of the disease that a cardiologist, an infectious disease specialist, and a cardiac surgeon is involved with your recovery.
