General Burgoyne attacked American forces at Freeman's Farm, located approximately 10 miles south of Saratoga. The British sustained heavy casualties; they lost twice as many soldiers as the Americans. Burgoyne then decided to go against the advice of his senior officers and ordered another attack on the American forces.

On June 30th, British forces appeared near Fort Ticonderoga. This fort is positioned on the shore of Lake Champlain, located near the Vermont, New York, and Canadian borders.

By July 5th, American forces evacuated peacefully, and the British took control of the fort.

September 20 - October 7, 1777 - The Battle of Bemis Heights

General Burgoyne submits his battle plans, which are ultimately approved on March 2, 1777.

In the summer of 1777, General Burgoyne was low on supplies after his recent victories. He got the idea to raid the American supply depot at Bennington, Vermont. Burgoyne's information regarding the number of men guarding the garrison were wrong, and the British were ultimately defeated.

The two forces met again at Bemis Heights. Major General Arnold led the American forces, who ultimately defeated the British in what would be a major turning point in the war.

Burgoyne surrendered on October 17, 1777. With this victory, France decided to support the American colonists in the war. This would prove to be a key factor and lead to the Americans winning the war.
