Chichijima

  • There were many testimonies that documented Japanese soldiers' acts of cannibalism among their troops, on enemy dead, and on Allied prisoners of war in many parts of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.
  • cannibalism was often an activity conducted by whole squads of soldiers under the command of officers.
  • In February 1945, it is documented that Japanese soldiers killed and consumed five American airmen.
  • This case was investigated in a war crimes trial, and of 30 Japanese soldiers prosecuted, five were found guilty and hanged.
  • Many suspect that this was a ritual cannibalization of the livers of freshly killed prisoners, and also a cannibalization-for-sustenance of living prisoners over the course of several days.

Siberia

  • After the German surrender in January 1943, about 100,000 German soldiers were taken prisoners of war. Almost all of them were sent to POW camps in Siberia where, due to being chronically underfed by their Soviet captors, many resorted to cannibalism.
  • Fewer than 5,000 of the prisoners taken from Leningrad survived captivity. The majority, however, died early in their imprisonment due to extremely low temperatures or sickness
  • Baba Yaga is a Russian folktale mentioned in City of Thieves multiple times
  • The name Baba yaga means "Grandmother" or "an old lady"
  • Told to young children to teach them to help those less fortunate then them
  • The antagonist in this story uses the threat of cannibalism to induce fear
