Adeline's father marries a beautiful Eurasian woman called Niang. Niang turns out to be bitter and has two children with her father, making the total number of children seven.

Adeline gets the leading class award in kindergarten.
Adeline`s grandmother, Nai Nai, dies from a stroke.
Adeline's family moves to Shanghai except for her Aunt Baba, who is her best friend, and Ye Ye, who is her grandfather.

Adeline has to walk to and from school all year and is picked on at home but she finds comfort at school becomes the top in her class.
Adeline meets Wu Chun-mei at school and they quickly become friends.
All of the children in Adeline's family get pet ducklings. Adeline names her duckling PLT and in no time she loves it.
Chinese New Year 1948
Adeline's older sister, Big Sister, gets married and moves away.
Adeline goes to Wu Chun-mei's birthday party. Going to anyone's house or having anyone come over is against Niang's rules. When Niang finds out she punishes Adeline.
Adeline is punished and sent to a boarding school in Tianjin. Soon she is the only one left. Fortunately, her aunt takes her back to her parents.
Adeline goes to school and skips several grades. She is picked on constantly and her favorite thing to do is read in the school's library.
March 1952
Sadly, Adeline's grandfather dies.
Adeline wins the International Play-writing competition. She is a very good writer.
Upon hearing the news that Adeline won the competition, her father lets her go to an English boarding school.
Adeline becomes a doctor, moves to California, gets married twice, and her father dies.

PLT is killed by Niang's dog, Jackie.
