Also, Joseph aided the Union by disposing $200,000,000 in bonds . Later President Ulysses S. Grant, who had become Jesse Seligman's freind when he was a First Lieutenant, offered Joseph Seligman the posision of United States Secretary of the Treasury, which he declined.
His company, J & W Seligman and Co., financed several railroads:
- Missouri Pacific
- Atlantic Pacific Railroad
- South Pacific Coast Railroad
- Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad
He also helped pay for New York's first elevated railway.
