After Odysseus is done telling his tale to Arete, Echeneus and Alcinous, the queen Arete proclaims her disapproval of sending Odysseus on his way so quickly with few gifts. Odysseus, however, tricks Alcinous into giving him more gifts than intended by saying that it will make his kingdom look powerful and wealthy.

The Odyssey: Book 11

Epilogue

By Tea' Roland and Shelby Rooker

After his meeting with Tiresias, Odysseus finally allows his mother to drink the lamb's blood. He learns from her that his wife is still waiting for his return and no one has tried to take his rights as king. She also tells him that Telemachus still keeps the peace in the kingdom and attends public banquets. Odysseus's father never leaves his farm to go to town, even though he has to sleep in the lodge with his servants because the farm lacks a bed for him. He learns that his mother died waiting for him to return.

An example of an epic simile in Book 11 is on page 256, line 253, "...and the spirit, rustling, flitters away... flown like a dream." The simile is comparing a dream and a spirit. They make this comparison to show what happens to a person when they pass away, that they float away like an escaped dream.

An example of when Odysseus shows a quality of an epic hero is when he shows wit and intelligence when he tricks Alcinous into giving him much more gifts than intended.

This entire book was a re-telling of Odysseus and his men visiting the underworld, which is an archetype.

An illustration of 'The law of the gods' is that even after he gets home, Odysseus still has to pay a debt to Poseidon.

Tiresias appears and tells Odysseus his prophecy.

Following his conversation with his mother, Odysseus goes to talk to other spirits. He speaks with Tyro, daughter of lord Salmoneus and wife of Cretheus, first, and she tells him about her affair with Poseidon, and gave him two sons, Pelias and Neleus. Then, he speaks with Antiope, daughter of Asopus, about her time with Zeus, and how she bore him twin sons, Amphion and Zethus.

Odysseus travels farther into the Underworld and sees his deceased friend, Elpenor. They speak and Elpenor explains to Odysseus that he wants a proper burial and for his legacy to not be forgotten.

The Prophecy

Prologue

Odysseus then saw Alcmena, wife of Amphityron, who had an affair with Zeus, and had his son, who she names Heracles. Next, Epicaste appeared before him, who's son had murdered his father, then married her.

Following Epicaste, Chloris came forward, wooed by Neleus and his gifts.

Leda, king Tyndareus's wife, was the next to drink the blood. She gave the king twin sons, Castor and Polydeuces, both now buried alive, taking turns dying one day and being alive the next.

Characters:

Odysseus and his men will reach Thrinacia Island and find the cattle of the sun god. If they leave the animals alone, then they will reach Ithaca, but if they harm the cows, the ship will be destroyed and the men will die. If Odysseus escapes, he'll get home much later and he will find his home a disaster. Men will try to win the heart of his wife and take his wealth. After he has disposed of the intruders, he must sacrifice fine beasts to Poseidon, such as a ram, a bull, and a wild boar to make things right with him. Then, he must make noble offerings to all of the other gods and goddesses, so that he will have a gentle, painless death. The last thing Tiresias tells Odysseus is that if he should turn any spirits away from the blood, then they shall disappear.

Odysseus: the main character, "the old campaigner" (mortal)

Circe: "the awesome nymph" (minor goddess)

Elpenor: Odysseus's deceased companion (mortal)

Tiresias: "Seer of Thebes" (mortal)

Anticleia: Odysseus's mother (mortal)

Helios: "god of the sun who sees all" (god)

Persephone: "dread" (goddess)

Hades: "almighty god of death" (god)

While waiting for the prophet, Tiresias, Odysseus sees the ghost of his mother. Afraid that it is an illusion, he does not let her drink the blood.

Plot

Book 11 is a retelling of Odysseus and his men's

travels to the underworld.

Odysseus was next visited by the spirit of Iphimedeia, wife of Aloeus, who also had an affair with Poseidon and had two children with him, neither of which lived for a long time.

Phaedra, Procris, and the daughter of king Minos, Ariadne also spoke with him. He saw Clymene, Maera, and Eriphyle as well as many others he had no time to speak with. The number of the dead was greater than which he could count.

Odysseus and his men sacrifice lambs so the spirits of the undead can speak to him by drinking the blood off of his sword.
