Circulation through the body:

There are two different types of circulation

Pulmonary Circulation:

Right side of the heart pumps blood from the heart to the lungs

Systemic Circulation:

Oxygen-rich blood then flows into the left side of the heart and pumped to the rest of the body.

Responsible for getting oxygen and nutrients to the rest of the body

Three types of blood vessels--- Arteries, capillaries, and veins

Oxygen rich blood leaves the blood vessel called the Aorta which is the first of a series of blood vessels

Arteries:

Large vessels that carry blood from the heart to the tissues

Capillaries:

Smallest of blood vessels are capillaries.

They are only one cell thick, and most are so small that the blood cells must go in a single line.

Veins:

Once blood cells pass through the capillaries, they go through the veins to return to the heart

Actual carrier of the oxygen and nutrients

Disease:

Coronary heart disease

Caused by atherosclerosis which occurs when fatty material builds up in your arteries

As the coronary arteries fill up with fat, blood flow to the heart can slow and even stop

Circulatory system

Composed of:

The heart,

A series of blood vessels

The blood that flows through them

The blood vessels:

The heart:

Valves in the heart prevent any blood leaving the atria to enter back in.

Mostly a muscle,

located near the center of the chest.

There are two thin layers surrounding the myocardium

(thick layer of muscle)

Myocardium is what pumps blood through the body

Atrium: receives the blood

Ventricle: Pumps blood out

Two of each

All arteries carry oxygen-rich blood except pulmonary arteries

Real purpose of capillaries is to bring nutrients and oxygen to tissues, and then absorb carbon dioxide and waste products.

The blood:
