Conflict

Did I pick this book?

I decided to pick this book because, I originally got the second book ( Rip Tide: as pictured) as a free one from the library. I soon realized that it was a two book series and found the first book, Dark Life. I also have a liking for the sci-fi genre.

The main conflict of the story

is that Ty is out diving when he finds a submarine wreck were he is surprised to find his soon to be friend, Gemma. They set out to find her brother to sign a form for her release from the boarding home where she lives. Meanwhile, outlaws are laying waste to the colonists homes subsea. Their first attack being Ty's friend.

Time

Theme

Several characters in the story either stress the importance of being proud of themselves, or learn to accept themselves and love who they are. So with that said, the theme is to accept who you are even if others may not like it.

Setting

Dark Life takes place in a Benthic settlement where the first subsea pioneers settled. The story is set in the future, where global warming has caused rising sea levels, and half the world has been swallowed by the sea. There is not much room left on land, and those who live there are crowded into tall skyscrapers. This is why people are beginning to try life under the ocean.

Impression

My overall impression of this

book was GREAT. This book has the excitement of an adventure book, the suspense of a mystery and overall just the writing of a great author.

My Favorite Character

My favorite character is Shade

because he is always mysterious

and just has a really cool vibe when you read the story. He also has a REALLY COOL power called a dark gift, ill explain later.

Summary

Dark Life is the story of Ty, a teenage boy living under the sea. He meets Gemma, a teenage girl from the Topside (Land), who has gone under the water searching for her brother. When an outlaw group called the Seablite Gang attacks a homestead, Ty and Gemma get more involved than they would like. They find out that Shade (leader of the Seablite Gang) can change his appearance thanks to his 'Dark Gift.' Ty also has a Dark Gift that he has been keeping secret, which he decides to reveal to the other settlers in order to save Shade's life. When the settlers are caught in the Trade Station as it floods, Ty uses his Dark Gift to call to a pod of dolphins to save them all.
