When Raleigh came back to England from his last expedition to Guyana in 1616, his death sentence was invoked by King James I. At his execution on October 29, 1618, he asked to see the ax that would be used to behead him. When he saw the ax he replied, "this is as sharp as medicine, but it's a physician for all diseases." His head was embalmed and presented to his wife, who carried it everywhere she went until she died 29 years later at the age of 82. When she died, Raleigh's head was buried with the

rest of his body right beside his wife.

Raleigh sent an expedition to the Orinoco River in Guyana, where they were hoping to find gold. He wrote a book, and according to that book, the expedition was not successful.

While Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower of London, he wrote a famous book named "The History Of The World."

In 1603 James I took the throne because Queen Elizabeth I passed away. At that time Raleigh was framed as a member of a plot against the throne. He was sentenced to be hung, disemboweled, beheaded and quartered. His sentence was changed at the last minute to lifetime in the Tower of London.

Around 1589 Raleigh was in Europe. He had a garden in his home and when he was living there he planted the potato. The potato had been brought to England by his expedition to Virginia. He also later introduced tobacco to the old world with a leaf from Virginia.

Raleigh sent an expedition to Plymouth, England. The commanders of this expedition were Philip Amadas and Arthur Bartlowe. They landed on the coast of NC in 1584. Raleigh's colonists who were sent would soon be known as the Lost Colony of North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Sir Walter Raleigh battled for French Huguenots in 1569. Huguenots were fighting against protestants for religious freedoms.

Raleigh was knighted on January 6, 1585 by Queen Elizabeth I. He secretly married a women named Bessie Throckmortan. This made Queen Elizabeth I very mad because Bessie was one of her ladies-in-waiting and she did not ask permission to get married. The queen locked them in the Tower of London. They were released by Christmas.

Raleigh had a ship built that would be involved with the fighting with Spanish Armada. It included four masts, a normal crew (made of 270 people) and weighed 800 tons. This ship was chosen to lead the English fleet in 1588 against the Spanish Armada.
