Everything and every situation has a purpose and can be useful.
Ex:
1) The nurse uses the situation of people dying to condition the twins on death.
2) Dead bodies are cremated and their phosphurpus is harvested for use after their death.
This chapter shows that he World State has removed all feelings from things by breaking down the family stucture, in order to get the most use out of everthing. Since people have no feelings for each other or special attachments, dying people can easily be used for education and the benefit of the World State Government.
"Well then, keep them away from this bed." The savage's voice was trembling with indignation. "What are these filthy little brats doing here at all? It's disgraceful!"
"But I'm John!" he shouted. "I'm John!" And in his furious misery he actually caught her by the shoulder and shook her.
"Oh, God, God, God..." the Savage kept repeating to himself. In the chaos of grief and remorse that filled his mind it was the one articulate word. "God!" he whispered it aloud. "God..."
Imagery:
Ex: "Her pale, bloated face wore an expression of imbecile happiness."
Metaphor:
Ex: "In a moment, it seemed, the ward was moggoty with them."
Symbolism: (the nurse is a symbol of the World State's views and logic)
Ex: "Disgraceful? But what do you mean? They're being death-conditioned. And I tell you, if I have any more of your interference with their conditioning, I'll send for the porters and have you thrown out."
1) Situationsal Irony- The hospital is considered a happy place, even though it is the place that peopole go to to die.
2) Verbal Irony- John claims that the twins are acting disgracefully in the presene of his dying mother, when in the society of the World State, John is the disgraceful by reacting the way he dos to his mother's death, and disrupting the death conditioning of the twins.
These two examples of irony show the large divide between the two cultures. In one culture where a certain behavior is accepted, it is almost alwatys expressly forbidden in the other culture, while the opposite of the behavior is accepted.
The setting for this chapter was The Park Lane Hospital for the Dying. This setting affects the conflicts that took place here because it is in theWorld State, so John's views are considered to be completely unorthodox, obscene, and rebellious.
Linda, who had been asleep for a few minutes, suddenly awakens and begins mumbling about Pope. John becomes furious that Linda will not recognize him, and is only concerned for Pope. He begins to think of all the bad memories he has of growing up on the reservation, and starts to shake his mother, demanding she recognize him. Linda does, but John does not realize it. Linda's respiratory systembegins to fail as a result of all the soma she had ingested. John thinks that it was he that killed her, and begins to yell for the astonished nurse.
John arrives at the hospital where his mother (Linda) is dying, As John is watching LKinda watch TV and fall in and out of consciousness, John begins to think of all the good memories he had of growing up with his mother. By now, curious children beingdeath conditioned by the nurse have surrounded Linda's bed. One child makes a rude remark and gets too close to Linda, prompting John to physically remove him. The nurse becomes worried that John's reaction to death will undo the death conditioning of the children, so she attempts to distract them with a game of hunt-the-zipper.
John vs. John- John struggles to control his "savage" feelings when his mom does not recognize him and then dies
John vs. the Twins- John becomes physically violent with the twins after they disrespect his mother
John vs. Nurse- the Nurse struggles to comprehend why John is acting the way he is in the face of the death of his mother
John vs. Linda- the complicated and obscene relationship between the two is tested
