Health Treatment Issues

Poverty

Introduction

The health benefits were lacking during The Great Depression. People couldn't afford the medicines or the treatment causing a higher death rate, unless you had traded food for treatment.

The Great Depression caused poverty to hit all of America. This shows in Maycomb's lack of money and use of barter.

Dislocated Families

Unemployment

For an example,Dill spent different summers with different families because he was a foster kid.

To Kill a Mockingbird was set in the 1930s which happened to be right in the Great Depression. This explains lots of characteristics of the story.

The Great Depression left thousands of people unemployed. In the book, jobs were hard to get and there were unemployed characters like Bob Ewell.

Chaos

Racism

Living Conditions

The treatment of women

There were many out breaks of violence during The Great Depression, people looking for food, trying to maintain reputations such as the bob ewell tried to keep a good reputation with saying tom raped his daughter instead of her tempting tom.

Barter

During the Great Depression there was racism when the Aunt didn't trust Calpurnia with Scout and Jem because she was black, along with Tom being called guilty for false charges.

Living conditions were very bad during the Great Depression. Many people were homeless. And many others did not take care of their homes. We see this with the Ewell family. None of the chldren are clean and did nothing to help out.

Bibliography

Women were respected during the time of the Great Depression. They took care of the children and cooked and cleaned. In the book Calpurnia is respected by Atticus because she does so much for their family.

Barter was one of the few resources people used. During the great depression many people traded with their neighbors and friends in order to make ends meet. An example of this is when in the book the Cunninghams trade with Atticus.

The Great Depression left families without jobs which meant less food and goods in general for everyone. The Cunninghams go hungry due to their lack of money.

Businesses and industries were very much affected by the Great Depression. Many had shut down and had completetly gone out of business. Businesses were unable to make enough money to keep the company up and running.

Schooling was hard for some children. Some kids didnt even attend school. We see this in the book when one of the Ewell boys only shows up to school the first day of every year and then doesn't return.
