Skyrocketing foreclosures and job layoffs have pulled the rug out from under many families, particularly those living in low-income communities. Deepening poverty is linked with rising levels of homelessness and food insecurity/hunger and many Americans and children particularly affected by these conditions.
Poverty does affect some races more than others. Racism has existed in the United States for hundreds of years and that racism comes a lot of different rules. "40% of male black population in the state of Alabama will permanently lose the right to vote as punishment of a criminal conviction." "Single-mother headed households are more prevalent among African American and Hispanic families contributing to ethnic disparities in poverty."
The lives of African Americans have been profoundly shaped by the era of slavery. The era of racial terror that continued from the end of Reconstruction until World War II, and the era of Jim Crow. Racial apartheid that produced the civil rights movement, and now the era of mass incarceration.

Children in poverty are being treated worse than other children. "Absent/unemployed fathers and poverty are all associated with increased maltreatments." Percentages of poverty in families increase the chance of violence in homes.
