Ghost is the symbol of the
soldiers' fears. When they are really
scared they see madmen,murderers, the dead soldiers, and especially, they see ghosts. Those connect to their childhood's fears, which represents the immaturity of Vietnam War's soldiers.

Tim O'Brien, the author, was Vietnam. He was the war, the horror, the fears and everything the U.S. soldiers had experienced. Through this quote, O'Brien shows that fears were shared between soldiers. Fear creates disunity but also connected feelings of war buddies.
It shows that O'Brien was so angry with Bobby Jorgenson's nervousness while treating him. It starts the two's conflict, causes disunity in the army.

O'Brien creates a man vs man conflict between Bobby Jorgenson and himself. Tim always want to revenge Bobby due to his mistake in treating Tim's wound. It connects to one of the real problems happened to the U.S. army in the Vietnam War.

O'Brien describes the fear as you are a shadow. When they are scared they become their shadows: weak, unreal, and useless. They are about to leave their future, belief and themselves behind and ready to die. It describes one of the soldiers' fears when they are at war.

Rat Kiley was replaced by a new medic Bobby Jorgenson Tim was shot and Jorgenson was too scared to crawl over to him, Tim nearly died of shock and since then, Tim wants to revenge. Bobby apologizes to Tim, but Tim still wants to revenge anyway. He asks Azar to help him scares Bobby at night. Jorgenson panics and rolls for cover, terrified. . Tim thinks it was even, but Azar refuses to stop. Azar took a white sandbag looks like a ghost to scare Bobby, but he doesn't scare and shoot the sandbag."Show's over", Azar said, and kicked Tim's head while he's huddling on the ground. Jorgenson treated the wound. The two apologized each other. and planned on scaring Azar
