The Eleventh Plague

Jeff Hirsch

Response

This causes the people of Settler's Landing to hire the slavers, of all people, to help them attack Fort Leonard. Stephen and Jenny then rally a good percentage of the community to fight the slavers.

I really enjoyed this book. It'd been a while since I'd read a post-apocalyptic book, so this was a nice choice for that type of story. It's a good action/dystopian book with a good touch of romance. It is around 290 pages, and it is a pretty easy read.

Will Stephen and Jenny prevail?

Or will the slavers win easily?

Read the Eleventh Plague

Stephen is taken to the settlement by a kindly man and his companions. He is amazed to find a thriving civilization in the midst of the mess that is the current world. Stephen initially helps in the fields, but is convinced by Jackson, his new friend, to come to school. Stephen quickly gets into trouble several times. He gets into a fight with the rich boy, the son of the "owner" of the settlement, Will Henry. He and Jenny, Jackson's Chinese sister, become friends quickly, and talk a lot. Then one night, they pull a prank on the Henrys, and Will's dad thinks it was people from another settlement, Fort Leonard.

Reccomendation

I would recommend this to people who enjoy post-apocalyptic action stories. I would also recommend this to boys due to the violence, but to girls due to the romance.

After eating the pears, they are resting when slavers enter the plane with a woman and her child. His dad tries to save them, but the slavers wake up and catch him trying to steal the keys to their vehicle. Stephen and his dad run away quickly, but Stephen's dad is injured. Stephen slowly makes his way to a cliff, which he slides down to get to the nearby river. Stephen's dad is now in a coma, and Stephen is alone. He falls asleep in an indent in a rock with his dad. He wakes up when he hears people, and he thinks it is the slavers. It turns out they are people from a settlement a little ways north.

PLOT

Stephen is a normal boy. He just doesn't live in a normal world. Several years ago the United States nuked China, essentially causing WWIII. The Chinese retaliated with a souped up form of the flu. The sickness, P11, spread like a wild fire, reducing the nation to shambles in weeks. Few survived, causing many people to start enslaving other survivors. Stephen and his father are now on their own, because his grandpa just died. While they are walking, they see a crashed plane a few hundred yards away. Inside the plane, they find a single jar of canned pears.
