Governmental Apologies

The Komagata Maru incident

  • In 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized to the Chinese for the head tax on Chinese Immigrants entering Canada
  • Also, in 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized at Ghandri Babiyan De Mela in B.C for the events of the Komagata Maru.
  • Now, in 2016, Justin Trudeau, current Prime Minister, promised a full pledged apology on May 18th in the House of Commons

Immigration in Canada

  • In the early 20th century, there were exclusion laws that were designed to keep Asians out of Canada
  • The ship was brought halt for two month, then was finally escorted back to Budge-Budge, India by the Canadian Military in July of 1914
  • 19 of the passengers were killed because they left the ship

Departure from Hong Kong

  • Hong kong was the start of the departure
  • The ship was supposed to leave on March, but Singh, the man who put the ship on reserve, got arrested for selling tickets to an illegal voyage
  • The ship was later departed in April of 1914, as Singh was bailed out of prison and given permission from the Governor of Hong Kong to set sail

Violation of Human Rights

What is the Komagata Maru Incident

  • The Komagata Maru Incident violated basic human rights
  • One of the rights violated stated that "Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person"
  • The government violated a human right that stated "No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile"
  • Another human right that was violated stated "Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and return to their country"
  • It involved a steamship, the Komagata Maru
  • It sailed from Hong Kong through Shanghai, China to Yokohama, Japan, then to Vancouver
  • The ship carried about 376 passengers, and most of them were immigrants from Punjab and British India
  • Out of the 376, 352 were not allowed in Canada and only 24 were allowed in Canada

It's sad here on this cruise ship. I thought that by now Canada would let us immigrate to their country. They only let 24 of us in to the country. We as a ship have decided to stay here on their dock until they have to let us in. Until then wish us luck.
