Neville Bonner
Early Life
Neville Bonner was born in New South Wales on the 28th of March, 1922. His father left him when he was a toddler. His mother, Julia Bell, died of an unknown illness when he was nine. Neville lived with his grandma for the rest of his childhood, who taught him how to speak and took him to Melbourne.
In 1967, Neville Bonner joined the Liberal Party.
He held local office, until in 1971, Liberal Senator Dame Annabelle Rankin resigned. Then Bonner was chosen to replace her, making him the first ever Indigenous Australian to sit in parliament.
When Neville Bonner was 38, he joined the board of directors of the OPAL (One People of Australia League), which is an Indigenous Rights Organisation. When he was 48, in 1970, he became its president for Queensland.
