Money

Money symbolizes respect

. When Valjean had no money no one payed any attention to him or cared about him

. When Valjean was the mayor and had money everyone showed him respect and treated him with more respect then they did when he was poor.

. Thenardier gave respect to Marius after he had given him money but before he hadn't really payed much attention to Marius.

The Law

The Law symbolizes order.

  • Many times ValJean broke the law
  • Javert always tried enforcing the law but didn't seem to be able to when it came to ValJean
  • Javert couldn't handle the law so he had no more "order".

Candlestick Holders

The Candlestick holders symbolize forgiveness.

The law is a symbol of needing to break it.

  • Jean ValJean is forgiven for the first time when he steals the candlestick holders. It's when he realizes he can be forgiven for what he has done.
  • Jean ValJean carries around the candlesticks everywhere he goes to remind himself he can be forgiven and that he can forgive other people.
  • When Jean ValJean lays down to die he lights the candlestick holders, and after he dies, Marius blows out the candles to signify that Jean ValJean has finally been fully forgiven.
  • ValJean breaks the law to help Cosette numerous times.
  • ValJean breaks the law to survive.
  • ValJean breaks the law to help others.

Love

Love symbolizes peoples actions and what it can make people do

. Marius Walks through a park everyday in his nice clothes just to try and impress Cosette.

. When Jean Valjean takes Cosette away from the park and moves Marius does everything in his power to find her even though he really doesn't know her.

Animals and Creatures

animals and creatures symbolize the characters and their personalities

. Jean Valjean never loved anyone before and Cosette changed that and he never wanted her to leave so he did a lot of things just to keep her with him longer because he was afraid to lose her.

. The book often refers to thenardier as a snake because he is sneaky.

. Cosette is referred to as a lark, which is a small bird that is very musical and good.

. The Thenardiers have a son named Gavroche and he is known as a fly because unlike them he can do what he wants without anything holding him back.
