The symbol relates to the quote in that the hare could represent the impetuous Romeo, and the tortoise could symbolize the wise Friar Lawrence.
The symbol is also relatable to the quote because it shows the natures of both of the characters.
My Symbol (The tortoise and the hare)
The symbol of the tortoise and the hare relate to the theme of youth vs age especially well because the tortoise symbolizes age, patience, along with wisdom, while the hare represents foolhardiness and lack of care.
A relatable symbol to the theme of old vs young would be the symbolism of the tortoise and the hare. This would be a good symbol because it would highlight the differences between youth and age.
Youth vs Age
My chosen theme for this activity would be old vs young because it highlights some of the key moments in the play Romeo and Juliet and the effects of them.
The characters are related to the symbol because the symbol is shown as the characters are displayed, albeit slightly exaggerated and anthropomorphized. The characters are also relatable to the symbol in that without the characters, the symbol would be changed and would be on different characters, which would do away with the tortoise and the hare.
A good example of a quote in Romeo and Juliet would be: "Wisely and slow, they stumble that run fast" (II, iii, 94)
Some characters that are relatable to the theme of old vs young are Romeo and Friar Lawrence. I chose these characters because they provide a perfect contrast between the heedless ways of youth in the play and the wisdom of the older characters.
Quotation Analysis
This quote is spoken by Friar Lawrence to an excited and impatient Romeo, who wishes to get married to Juliet right away, even though he was melancholy over Rosaline only a day ago. Friar Lawrence provides a wise and patient contrast to the rash and youthful Romeo. The context of this quote is that it was exactly what the Friar was hoping for, as he had often wished for the feud to end. The Friar also chides Romeo before this about his quick and shallow loves, and offers Romeo some good advice regarding to love.
Romeo and Friar Lawrence are very relatable to the theme of youth vs age because they show the difference between patient and wise older characters and impatient and impetuous younger characters.
The quote is relatable to the characters because Romeo is the character hearing the quote, and Friar Lawrence is the character speaking it. This also reinforces the theme of youth vs age as both characters are quite contrasting.
This quote relates to the theme because it shows the contrast between the rash and often thoughtless youth in the play, and the often wise and patient older people. It is also relatable because it shows the wisdom of some of the characters, and also shows the need for wisdom by some of the other characters.
