Are you guilty?

When individuals from many different cultures and languages live together misunderstandings, biases, and judgments are inevitable. However, fair evaluations and learning experiences are possible and can strengthen acceptance of all those involved. In our global community, cultures cannot remain separate, no matter how different they are, and the resulting effects are varied and pervasive.

Culture Shock

Culture shock is the feeling of confusion, doubt, or fear people can experience when they encounter a new culture or language. Culture shock can be an excellent lesson in relative values and in understanding human differences. Culture shock occurs is when individuals are exposed to an alien culture or environment and language without adequate preparation for these differences.

Ethnocentrism

Ethnocentrism is the belief in the inherent superiority of one’s own ethnic group, language, or culture. It also includes judging another culture or language by the standards of one’s own culture or language.

Cultural Relativism

Stereotype

Cultural Relativism, the opposite of ethnocentrism, is the concept that cultural norms derive their value within the specific context of that culture. Cultural relativists try to understand unfamiliar values, languages, and norms without applying the standards of their own culture or language and without passing judgment.

A stereotype is an often unfair belief or thought that may be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain ways of speaking or doing things. These thoughts or beliefs may or may not be an accurate reflection of reality.

A fixed, commonly held notion or image of a person or group, based on an oversimplification of some observed trait of behavior or appearance.

A stereotype arises as a result of ethnocentrism.
