In the elizabethan era, people traveled by

carriages, wagons, and horseback.

The whole situation meant that in general people didn't travel very far or very often, because you didn't get far, and travelling was dangerous and cumbersome - and expensive.

People also traveled by boat on

long voyages that lasted for months

and months.

So most people pretty much stayed where they were.

This changed with the advent of the railway, but rail travel didn't become popular until 1850.

The main way to travel in Shakespeare's

time was by walking or on horse, but only

the wealthier people owned one.
