Jim Crow Laws Timeline

1881

Tennessee passed the first Jim Crow law, segregating train cars.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 8802, which eliminated hiring discrimination in the defense industry and established the Fair Employment Practices Commission. In response, black leaders, including A. Philip Randolph, canceled a planned march on Washington.

Plessy v. Ferguson was a landmark constitutional law case of the US Supreme Court. It upheld state racial segregation laws for public facilities under the doctrine of "separate but equal".

A Virginia law prohibits black and white children from attending the same schools. The measure will be renewed in 1882, 1902, 1930, 1956, and 1958

Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.
