The superego

Levels of Conscience

Defense Mechanisms

The ego tends to use defense mechanisms to achieve and aid repression. Repression occurs in the ego it is used to fight urges of inappropriate desires. The urges represent great strain upon the most important function of the mind.

While the ego may temporarily repress urges of the id and fear and punishment, this is where you can decide right from wrong. The superego is divided into two parts the conscience and the ego ideal. Conscience forces the ego to inhibit the id in pursuit of morally acceptable. Ego ideal aims an individuals path of life tword the ideal perfect goals instilled by society.

Freud subdivided the mind into different levels of consciousness to emphasize the unconscious. He thought that the different functions of the mind operated at different levels. The conscience level is where all of of our thought processes operate. In the pre- conscience there are memories and thoughts that at any moment could break into the conscience level. In the unconscious wishes, urges, thoughts, and memories, that represent and individuals past experience. repression keeps the mind in balance and keeps the urges in the unconscious from entering into the conscience.

The ego

The immediate gratification is usually impossible and often unwise. The reality principle is that the ego acts as a go between in the ids relations with reality. The ego tries to satisfy urges which eventually build great skills and memories, and the ego becomes aware of itself as an entity.

The Id

When a baby is born they want to only eat, drink, pee, poop, and be warm. The id is the most motivational force. When the urges of what a baby wants are not fulfilled the id will form a memory of the end og=f the motivation. This is called wish-fulfillment, it can satisfy the id for a moment.
