Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

Why did I choose these theories?

  • It is designed to reduce negative emotional and behavioral responses following child sexual abuse, domestic violence, traumatic loss, and other traumatic events.
  • 6 years old to 14 years old
  • Can be used for clients older than 14 y.o
  • Client's who have experienced one or more traumatic event

  • Guided imagery
  • Preparing children to share their stories with their caregiver
  • Provides structure
  • Hands on approach
  • Can modify model by incorporating other resources and activities (role plays, relaxation exercises etc.)

  • Can incorporate A Window Between Worlds
  • Can incorporate CPT and TF-CBT in the same session

  • CPT is based on a social cognitive theory of PTSD that focuses on how the traumatic event is construed and coped with by a person who is trying to regain a sense of mastery and control in their life.

Case Material

  • Session 1: Psychoeducation on PTSD symptoms, thoughts, automatic thoughts and emotions.
  • Client is assigned the impact statement where they write about their current understanding of why the traumatic event occurred and the impact it has had on beliefs about self, others, and the world.
  • Introduction to stuck points
  • Stuck point: If I swear revealing clothing, men with catcall and stare.
  • Stuck point: If I gain weight guys will stop catcalling.
  • Stuck point: If I don't wear make-up and don't do my hair guys will not stare at me.
  • Stuck point: If I invite a guy over to my house I will get sexually assaulted.
  • Stuck point: If I am alone in my car with a guy I will get raped.
  • Currently on page 25-27 with my two teenage clients
  • Still have not completed the CPT model with 3 of my clients
