The Anaconda Plan

General Strategy

Had two main Objectives:

1. Blockade all ports in the seceding states

2. With the use of around 80,000 men, take control of the Mississippi River and use as a "highway" branching through the Confederacy

Was a plan constructed to take time by slowly weakening the Confederacy and putting pressure on the civilians to demand surrender.

What was It?

The name used to call the Union's strategy for suppressing and defeating the Confederacy at the beginning of the Civil War

Proposed by General-in-Chief , Winfield Scott.

A passive approach, was made to subdue the Rebels with minimum casualties to both sides.

Blockade (Atlantic and Gulf)

  • Scott's original blockade plan was roughly put together.
  • Did not consider: the forces needed, the time it would take, or the retrieval of resources. (Blockade Strategy Board)
  • Atlantic: Board advised that Fernandina, FL be the southern anchor of the blockade (However, 2 minor forts were defeated before Fernandina)
  • Gulf:
