I chose this advertisement becasue it showed that the lives of the dhobis were filled with competitions like this one, "Don't trust your clothes to the dhobis using cheap inferior soaps" this sentence in the advertisement suggests competitors with the dhobis trying to spread a message to readers saying the dhobis could not be trusted, which emphasized on the point that life of a dhobi was filled with competition.

Individual contribution 1

This advertisement showed the advertiser trying to promote their soap product and stating the dhobis could not be trusted

This source showed the dhobis in Singapore, their living environment and the house they lived in.

I chose this source because it tells me that the lives of the dhobis were difficult, their occupation being a dhobi was already very difficult to make a living, yet from the fact that the dhobis were out on strike tells me they also had to face hardships of the enforcement of the new Municipal Byelaws, which reflects the difficulty the dhobis in Singapore was facing.

Source 2

This article showed the dhobis in Singapore were out on strike.

I chose this source because it shows the harsh environment the dhobis were living in. Their house were made up of straws and wood planks and the environment was bad and poor, and the house was fenced up by sticks and branches which could be destroyed easily, all these suggest the harsh and poor environment the dhobies were living in.

Source 4

This article showed that several dhobis were going to be prosecuted because of them sleeping in the clothes sent to them to be washed.

Source 5

I chose this source as it suggests to me that the dhobis were poor at that time, the fact that they slept in other people's clothes suggest to me that they were poor as they might not have proper clothes to be worn hence leading them to this action, which tells me their poverty of not even being able to afford a proper clothes.

This picture showed an Indian dhobi with laundries and a charcoal iron

I chose this source because it suggests to me that the lives of the dhobis in Singapore were tough. The dhobi in the picture was carrying a fairly large amount of laundries, on both his hand and head. It seems like they were already been washed and ready to be ironed. We can infer that making a living from such a strenuous job was not easy, hence showing the rigorous and tough life of a dhobi.
