But don't forget to come back here to finish things up.
In what ways have you seen oppression manifest?
How was it manifest?
Why was it manifest?
Well... you're about to learn a lot more!
Did you know...
... there are critical connections between the terms stereotype, prejudice, bias, bigotry and discrimination?
Here's how it works:
We are socialized to stereotype and form prejudices about others (cognitive).
Understanding these terms
will help you initiate culturally
safe practices... so take your
time to learn them!
Bigotry
Emotional
We internalize these stereotypes
and prejudices into attitudes of
bias and bigotry (emotional).
Behaviorial
Bias
Discrimination
Once learned, stereotypes and prejudices
resist change, even when evidence fails to support them or points to the contrary.
Systematic
Cycle of
Oppression
What do you already know about implicit bias?
We act on these attitudes and
discriminate against others
(behavioral).
What is implicit (hidden) bias?
How are biases reinforced?
What do I need to know and do to feel culturally safe and to help others feel culturally safe?
Why is important to recognize individual and collective implicit bias?

Testing implicit or hidden bias
is the first step to developing
culturally safe practices.
Your willingness to examine your own possible biases is an important step in understanding the roots of stereotypes and prejudice in our society.
Hidden Bias Tests measure unconscious, or automatic, biases.
So test yourself!
Please link to the Harvard Implicit Bias survey and follow the steps to determine your level of implicit bias. Start with the Race AIT, but you are welcome to participate in multiple tests.

Here are the BIG THREE questions you will
explore thoughout this eCourse and into the
Germany Study Abroad program:
Take a minute to study this chart
and then list 10 personal
biases you might have
in any of these areas.
How can I develop cultural competencies?
Let's revisit Big Three Question #1:
No one else will see your
list - this is just for you so
be honest in your self-
assessment.
Using the blog function accessible through your Canvas portal, create a Reflection Blog sharing what you have learned about yourself.
Include at least 5 (five) ways you will challenge your personal biases and changes you will make to help yourself and others feel culturally safe.
Why is it critical to develop greater global awareness?
BE CREATIVE! Your Reflection Blog may be written or designed using any tools or Web 2.0 apps you choose.
Refer to Canvas for full assignment requirements.
Now that you have listed 10 personal biases, answer the following questions:
You have learned what you need to KNOW... now it's time for you to determine
what you will DO to make yourself
and others feel culturally safe.
What are some of the areas in which you have the most personal biases?
“A great relationship is about two things:
First, find out the similarities,
Second, respect the differences.”
~Unknown
How were you socialized to develop these biases?
Why did they become a part of your personal world view?

People will embrace anecdotes that reinforce their biases, but disregard experience that contradicts them. The statement "Some of my best friends are _____" captures this tendency to allow some exceptions without changing our bias.
