modern day sail
-Sails were made of Papyrus, not cloth
-Sailboats didn't require men to paddle
-Mesopotamia was situated between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, so the sail was a very useful invention
-The Sail was created about 3000 years ago
-With the Sail, the Mesopotamians traveled as far as what is now India
The Sail was a square papyrus material, that with the wind's help pushed the sailboat across the water. The sail was a large bumpy material that had a very neutral colour. The sail varied in colour and size since ancient Mesopotamian didn't have any factories like we do nowadays, so each looked slightly different.
Mesopotamian sails and Modern day sails have some similarities and some differences in the way we build, and use them nowadays.
In many ways Mesopotamian and modern day sails are very similar. They sail across water the same way they did 3000 years ago, they are both attached to boats and both don't need paddles to move.
Mesopotamian and modern day sails also have many differences. Both of them are used for different reasons. For example, Mesopotamian sails were used for fishing and trading, wheres nowadays sails are used mainly for enjoyment and fishing for fun. Both of them aren't built with the same materials.
Over the years, the sails importance has changed a lot since we now have motorized vehicles, and roads.
Mesopotamian Sailboat
The Sail had a big importance to the Mesopotamian culture. It was needed for travel, trade, and food.
Think about living in Ancient Mesopotamia and you had no essential resources to survive. You would have to trade with other countries to get essential resources. Since Mesopotamia is situated between two rivers (Euphrates and Tigris), you need water transportation to get to other cities and countries. but what if they hadn't invented the Sail? Without the sail, it would be very hard work to to get to the other side of the river. You would need many men to row the boat.
If the Mesopotamian's hadn't invented the sail, they would not have been able to go far out in the water without tired people, to catch big fish. Without the Sail the Mesopotamians wouldn't have been able to trade big fish to other countries. They also wouldn't have had another food resource without the Sail.
As you can see, the Sail had a huge importance to the Mesopotamian culture.

First, you have to attach the sail to a boat. After this, put the sailboat in the water and the next step is to sit in the sailboat. Once the wind comes, your sailboat will be taken out to sea so you can fish, and trade.
To create the sail, you will need papyrus, wood, and variations of plants. The Papyrus is for the actual sail part, and the wood and plants are for the pole.
Once you assemble your papyrus sail, follow my steps and you will have a Mesopotamian sailboat.
