Simple Machines: Gears

Gears as speed multipliers

TEETH

What are Gears?

- gears are measured in teeth

- teeth are the ridges around the rim

- a gear with less teeth will spin faster

- There is no standardized width between them

Summary

- Gears are wheels that have teeth around their rim.

- They can mesh together or be linked via chain

- A set is called a gear train

- The main gear is called the driving gear, one connected is the driven gear

-When driving gear is larger than the driven gear.

-Occurs when one turn of the large cogs makes the smaller cog spin multiple times.

-Is called (you guessed it) gearing up

- Used in many everyday devices like

  • cars
  • motorbikes/bikes
  • cranes
  • watches
  • tools

- have been around for

2416

Using gears on bikes

Gears as Force Multipliers

-gears used in a bicycle are called sprockets

-the pedal & crank is attached to a sprocket called the chain wheel

-Connected by chain to rear sprocket

-The front chain wheel has 3 sprockets and the rear wheel has seven

- When the driving gear is smaller than the driven gear

- The larger moves slower but the train provides more force

- Is called gearing down
