"Blessing" By Imtiaz Dharker

Structure (Read By Rylea)

Enjambment is used throughout the poem which mimics the movement of the water and the people, It also increases the pace the poem is read at. If you divide the poem in half at line 11 the bottom half has less punctuation because this is where the people rush out for the water, and the poem reaches it's climax. Dharker has used 4 separate stanza's that all have different events happening in them. The longest of these stanza's is the 3rd, because it's about the rush of the people trying to collect water. The people are all moving in a clump desperate to get some water and the 3rd stanza is all clumped together just like the people. The stanza is also so long because it is the most important part of the poem.

Language (Read by Dominic)

The extended metaphor of water is used throughout the poem to create a vivid image of how important the water is to the people. In the third stanza Dharker writes "silver crashes to the ground" meaning that the silver is in reality water, but due to the lack of water the value of it is incredibly high to the people, whether to us it is taken for granted. Also in the poem there is use of onomatopoeia, for example in the second stanza : 'Drip' 'splash' and 'echo.' Connotations of the word drip include ;

-Wet

-Water

-Tap

The effect of onomatopoeia is that it makes you feel like you are inside the poem because you can literally here the sounds.

The poem "Blessing" is set in a poor village in Pakistan where there is a large shortage of water. The poem immediately starts with a simile "The skin cracks like a pod." which indicates heavy drought and shortage of water. This immediately creates an image of what it is like for the people in the readers mind. In the second stanza it says "The voice of a kindly god." Which indicates the people are desperate for water and to them it is really valuable. Dharker says " Imagine the drip of it.." Which creates a vivid image of water in the readers mind. and makes them feel a part of the poem themselves.

P; Dharker uses simile's throughout the poem

E: For example in the first stanza she says "The skin cracks like a pod."

A: She does this to indicate how dry the peoples skin is because of their lack of water.

Dharker also uses alliteration to emphasize particular phrases. It brings attention to the lack of water in the line "the small splash".

The use of extended metaphor throughout the poem indicates the way the people think of water as some miracle. For example "sudden rush of fortune" It makes readers think about the way they take water for granted and makes the poem quite sad, Due to the fact the children celebrate so much over a small amount of water.

IMAGERY; At the beginning of the poem it says; 'skin cracks like a pod' this simile makes you imagine what type of skin these people have, how dry it is how hard it is, etc.

The poet focuses only on the children in the last stanza because their reaction is so happy and powerful. It is more effective to focus on the children because children always show emotion and how they feel, So to end with them celebrating is very effective. It makes it easy to imagine the scene because happiness is easily described.
